About the Artwork:
In the past five years, there’s been a large acceptance of alternative relationship structures in society. One that is most rejoiced, and the one I found myself in, is older-woman with a younger male (25 year age gap).
In what I consider to be the most rewarding and deeply connective relationship I’ve ever had did have a reoccurring question; what were we going to do when Lucky wants kids? Conversations of egg donors or surrogates were casually discussed, but the tragic reality was children were likely not a tangible outcome.
My paternal desires are most vivid in my interactions with cats. As a playfully intended contra-deal, this romantic partner did offer to give me all the cats I could want as a substitute for kids, despite her having an allergy to them.
This painting is inspired by that offering, and an interpretation of a dream my girlfriend had. She found herself on a beach trying to sort a collection of meandering kittens into boxes, according to which she deemed most valuable; notably two purple ones and a fat black one. The price tag of the more valuable kittens falls, a representation of the fickle nature of ambition.
