About the Artwork:

I feel a missing piece in the lives of the under thirties is mentorship; many of the managers I have worked under speak of a figure who provided them with guidance and advice in their early careers that helped form the basis of their professional knowledge and presentation. However, the current workplace climate seems to primarily seek ‘3rd Year Apprentices’; rookies with a close to refined skillset and presentation. Opportunity favours the experienced.

This painting can be interpreted many ways, either vilifying the younger characters, or the older ones.

This painting depicts a fox holding a limp paintbrush, a phallic-like symbol of helplessness or incompetence as he stands across from a young rabbit, a presumable peer as he looks on in envy at a deal being made. Opposite we see a hat maker entertaining a client, the Devil. The hat maker represents a refined craftsman, he is polished and presentable. The Devil is an allegory for the modern workplace experience; a space not of familiarity, routine and trust, but anxiety. His physical manifestation is charming, but his reflection suggests a hidden two sidedness.

I believe within the generational desires for mentorship is accountability, wherein the older generations could be more patient and generous, and the younger generation be more compliant and ambitious.
