About the Artwork:
An ailment of modern dating is the necessity of using apps. Arranging dates is a fickle arrangement wherein the slightest stray from your match’s ideal avatar becomes an immediate rejection. I’ve had a date cancel 30 minutes before the arranged meeting time, and as of the week of this exhibition’s opening had three separate dates cancel within a 12 hour window – no reason given. Recently, I had a date that I perceived to have gone incredibly well; we had good banter, she seemed to be flirting, similar interests, values and family structures. We parted ways, and then the following day I thanked her for the date and expressed an interest to rendezvous again. She declined, stating, “I think you’re too wholesome for me”, a statement that racked my brain for the rest of the day – was she calling me boring? But I mentioned I’ve worked with famous people, rolled cars, blown-up buildings, and run a wine business – how is that boring?
The artwork presents an Easter Island statue dolled up in makeup and earrings as they wait for a date. The Easter Island head has poured themselves several glasses of water as they anxiously await their date.
